New Zealand comedian and writer Cal Wilson has died aged 53 after a “short illness”.
In a statement, her management said that she was “surrounded by family and friends after a short illness at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.”
They said: “Vale Cal Wilson. We are devastated to share the news that Cal Wilson, the much-loved stand-up comedian, writer and actor died today, surrounded by family and friends in hospital after a short illness.
The New Zealander who made Australia home is survived by her husband, Chris wood and son, Digby.
Cal Wilson husband Chris Woods
Chris Woods is the husband of the late comedian and Great Australian Bake Off host, Cal Wilson, who tragically died on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
Wilson was born in New Zealand and moved to Melbourne in 2003, where she met her future husband at a bar in the hip suburb of Northcote.
‘I was getting over a bad relationship at the time and we met at a mutual friend’s gig. I thought, “He could be a great fling.” Twenty years later we are still together with a 14-year-old son,’ she told The Sydney Morning Herald in July.
Chris dated Cal for four years before they tied the knot in 2008.
Woods works in the education sector and appears to be an extremely private person as he was rarely seen at events with his wife.
‘Chris is kind and a man of his word. When he couldn’t stay at a gig one night, he told me he had to leave as he wanted to see one of his students run a cross-country. I thought, “Wow, here is a man who has chosen to be a teacher not for the money but because he genuinely loves it”,’ she added.
Melbourne photographer Alan Moyle shared a loved-up photo to Instagram of Chris and Cal getting married in 2003 and captioned it with some heartbreaking words.
‘We had so many memories, both for work and for fun, from the first time we did a shoot back in 2003 through to her and Chris’s brilliantly colourful wedding,’ he wrote.
‘I’m going to miss her and devastated for Chris, Digby, the cats and the whole extended family.’
Cal Wilson son Digby?
Digby is 14 years old – as of October 2023 – and appears to be less camera shy than his Dad, as he has been pictured alongside his mum at several red carpet events.
Digby enjoys to cook and in a touching interview just a few months before her death, Cal said she hoped her son would remember their weekends together – which they spent making pancakes.
She spoke of an unbreakable bond they had and said the two of them would spend hours on end in the kitchen.
The comedian was asked on Adam Miller’s Bakeology podcast what she thinks Digby will remember her for.
She replied: “I think it will be for pancakes because that’s a fairly regular weekend thing.”
Has Chris Woods said anything about his wife Cal Wilson’s death?
Chris Wood has not made a public statement about his wife’s passing but her management team have released a heartfelt message.
The tribute reads: “We are devastated to share the news that Cal Wilson, the much-loved stand-up comedian, writer and actor died today, surrounded by family and friends after a short illness at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.
“Cal’s generosity, talent and friendship have been constants in the Australian comedy scene for the last twenty years.
