World champion Kiwi wood chopping legend Jason Wynyard has died at the age of 49.

Who was Jason Wynyard ?
Jason Wynyard was a New Zealand champion woodchopper from Kawakawa.
He won over a hundred world titles in the sport. Of Māori ancestry, he affiliated to the Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngāpuhi iwi.
He was educated at Waitākere College. Wynyard at the Lumberjack World Championship in 2011
Wynyard won the individual world championship nine times. He holds the world record for Single Buck (with assistant) with a time of 9.39 in 2007.
Wynyard won the Stihl Timbersports Series 14 times. He won the title in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
In the 2017 New Year Honours, Wynyard was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the sport of wood chopping.
Wynyard was the father of former University of Kentucky men’s basketball player Tai Wynyard.

He was surrounded by his loved one’s at home at the time of his death – including his wife, Sharon and sons, Tail Wynyard, 25, and Tautoko Waynyard, 18.
Jason Wynyard death cause
Jason Wynyard reportedly died on Wednesday, October 4, 2023. At the time of his death, he was 49 years old.
His death comes following a brief battle with an aggressive form of cancer.
Wynyard, who won nine senior world championships and many more titles around the world, was diagnosed with stage four Burkitt Lymphoma in May, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system.
His family confirmed his death in a statement made from Wynyard’s Facebook page, which said he passed away at home surrounded by loved ones.
“Jason was diagnosed with stage 4 Burkitt lymphoma in May 2023, and fought bravely against the disease until his last breath. He passed away peacefully this morning at 2.20am, October 4th, 2023, holding the hand of his beloved partner Sharon Kennerley and their whanau and received into the arms of his long awaiting tupuna on the other side of the veil.
“He was a true champion, not only in wood-chopping, but in life. He inspired generations of athletes with his skill, passion, and humility. He left a lasting legacy that will never be forgotten,” the statement said.
