Mack Chase , the founder of Artesia-based Mack Energy Corp. and Chase Farms, and at one point the richest person in New Mexico, died on Monday in Artesia at 92.

In a statement, New Mexico House Republican members Jim Townsend, Cathrynn Brown and Jimmy Mason remembered Chase for his sense of community and work in the oil and gas industry.

“We express our condolences to the Chase family, Mack Energy employees, and the community who will no doubt feel the loss of Mack, who championed our communities and oil and gas industry in New Mexico,” they said.

Mack C. Chase was born April 29th, 1931, the 4th of 8 children to Edgar and Marie Chase.

Upon graduation he served in the Army and was stationed in Korea from 1951 to 1953.

In the early years Mack worked on pulling units with Chase Well Service and in 1979 formed Marbob Energy with John R. Gray.

In 1990 Mack founded Mack Energy Corporation, an oil and gas production operating company.

Forbes, as recently as 2019, named Chase the richest person in New Mexico, with a net worth of $700 million.

Mack and his wife Marilyn were married for 63 years before her passing in December 2016.

They have two sons, Robert and Richard, one daughter, Gerene, six grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

In 1983 Mack was recognized as “Businessman of the Year” by the Artesia Chamber of Commerce; in 1997 he was Artesia Desk and Derrick’s “Boss of the Year;” in 2000 Mack Energy Corporation was recognized as the Artesia Chamber of Commerce’s “Corporate Business of the Year.”

In 2005 Mack was awarded a lifetime achievement award from the Artesia Public Schools for his support and generosity over the years.

A proud and compassionate person, he has always been a staunch supporter of youth and community organizations.

He was honored as the 2016 Top Hand by the Permian Basin Petroleum Association.

Chase, the founder of Artesia-based Mack Energy Corp. and Chase Farms, and at one point the richest person in New Mexico, died on Monday in Artesia at 92 with family by his side.

No cause of death was provided, He is survived by three children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

“The community here in Artesia really took care of him — helped him out,” said Chance Chase, Mack’s grandson.

“There were times when he wasn’t able to even buy a washer and dryer and someone gave him one, and he was able to pay him back later. … Ever since then, he’s instilled in our family that we take care of the communities that we live in.”

His death on Monday sparked an outpouring of comments on the Chase Foundation Facebook page. Many people thanked him for his philanthropic support over the years.
