Dianne Feinstein, the oldest member of the U.S. Senate and the longest-serving senator from California, has died at age 90.
Feinstein, a Democrat, was the oldest member of the Senate, where she had served since 1992. She held her seat in the chamber longer than any other woman and any other senator from California.
She passed away Thursday night at her home in Washington, D.C. Dianne Feinstein is survived by her only daughter Katherine Feinstein.

Who is Katherine Feinstein?
Katherine Anne Feinstein is an American attorney, public official, and former judge who currently serves as President of the San Francisco Fire Commission.
Feinstein previously served as Presiding Judge of the San Francisco Superior Court from 2010 to 2012 and as a Superior Court judge from 2000 to 2012.
Katherine Anne Feinstein is the only biological child of United States Senator Dianne Feinstein of California and her first husband Judge Jack K. Berman.
After her mother’s marriage to Bertram Feinstein in 1962 she took her stepfather’s last name. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley (1980) and Hastings Law School.

Dianne Feinstein welcomed her only child, daughter Katherine Feinstein, on July 31, 1957. Like her late mother, Katherine also has a career in politics.
After working as a law clerk for the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, she served as a prosecutor and worked as a lawyer representing police officers accused of wrongdoing.
She then took a job with the San Francisco city attorney’s office where she represented children in abuse and custody cases. In 2000, California Governor Gray Davis appointed her to the San Francisco Superior Court.
In 2012, she announced her retirement from the court, and Judge Cynthia Ming-mei Lee replaced her as presiding judge.
During her career, Feinstein founded several initiatives including Squires, a “scared straight” program that matched juvenile delinquents with convicts serving life sentences at San Quentin State Prison; and a program that jailed drunks who skip their court dates unless they enter a treatment program.
In 2016, she was named by California Governor Jerry Brown to the Medical Board of California.
In 2020, San Francisco Mayor London Breed appointed Feinstein to the city’s Fire Commission, which provides oversight of the San Francisco Fire Department. Feinstein currently serves as the commission’s president.

Dianne Feinstein died in the early morning hours on Friday at her Washington D.C. home with her daughter Katherine by her side.
The longtime Democratic senator died of natural causes at around 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, her office said.
Just hours before her death, the 90-year-old Feinstein was helped onto the Senate floor for the final public act of her trailblazing career.
Feinstein’s death was announced by her office on Friday. Tearful colleagues returned to the Senate floor on Friday morning to pay tribute to the first female mayor of San Francisco and California’s longest-serving senator.
Her daughter Katherine was in the gallery alongside Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, a fellow California lawmaker and friend of the family, as lawmakers from both sides of the aisle remembered the late senator as a political powerhouse who broke through gender barriers.

He ordered all flags on federal buildings to be at half-staff until Feinstein’s burial.
‘There’s no better example of her skillful legislating and sheer force of will than when she turned passion into purpose, and led the fight to ban assault weapons. Dianne made her mark on everything from national security to the environment to protecting civil liberties. She’s made history in so many ways, and our country will benefit from her legacy for generations,’ he said in a statement.
