Jimmy Buffett, whose sun-drenched songs celebrated life by the shore, died of a rare, aggressive skin cancer, according to a statement on his website.
Jimmy Buffett, 76, had Merkel cell cancer, according to the statement, which was posted after initial news of his death emerged on Saturday.
The statement also disclosed where the Margaritaville singer died – at his home in Sag Harbour, New York, near the Hamptons.
While Jimmy Buffett may have been known for his laid-back, tropical lifestyle, he was also a family man.
The “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere” singer was married to his wife, Jane Slagsvol, from 1977 until his death on Sept. 1, 2023, at age 76. A statement on his social media and website confirmed Buffet died with his family and friends around him.
“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” the statement read. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”
Jimmy Buffett and Slagsvol met in Key West, Florida, when Slagsvol was visiting the island for her college spring break.
At the time, Jimmy Buffett had just moved to Key West from Nashville after giving country music a try and had recently divorced his first wife, Margie Washichek; he formed the Coral Reefer Band in 1975 and was just beginning to develop his signature Caribbean rock genre.
In addition to sharing three children with the late singer, Slagsvol was also by Buffett’s side as he has built his Margaritaville empire. While the couple were very private when it came to their relationship, Slagsvol accompanied her husband to several red carpet events over the years, including various Margaritaville grand openings.

The couple met in Key West, Florida, after Jane visited during spring break.

The publication continued: “Jimmy Buffett began receiving hospice care last Monday and there was an outpouring of love from friends and family.
“We’re told a week ago Sir Paul McCartney came to Jimmy’s house and sang to Jimmy’s family.”
