I was saddened today to see the reports of the passing of Jim Reed, one of the inspirational pioneers of Australian drag racing. He and late wife, Nelma, drove alcohol supercharged altereds with much success in the 60s and 70s Jim was the patriarch of Reed Racing, and over more than 50 years he saw many members of his own and later extended families have successful racing careers in various forms of cars. Jim was always known, and referred to as “Gentleman Jim”., a very true and fitting description of a great man who will be missed and well remembered by many. Jim was 86.
I first met Jim in Townsville in 1986, and whenever our paths crossed at race meetings after this we always had good chats about how the car was performing on the day and how we had been. My sincere condolences to the Reed family for their loss. RIP Gentleman Jim
