Roméo Lavia, a young and talented Belgian midfielder, was born on January 6th, 2004. He is currently playing as a defensive midfielder for Southampton in the EFL Championship and is also part of the Belgium national team.
Lavia started his football journey at the age of eight when he joined Anderlecht’s training center in Neerpede near Brussels. At just 15 years old, he caught the attention of Pep Guardiola during a local international youth tournament for players under the age of 15.
Pep Guardiola was there because of his player Kevin De Bruyne who was co-organizing the KDB Cup tournament. After showing promising skills and talent, Roméo signed his first professional contract with Manchester City at sixteen years old and joined their U18 squad.
In November 2020, after only eleven appearances with Manchester City, Roméo got promoted to the U23 squad. With the EDS team, he won the Premier League 2 championship in April 2021 and was named the player of the season.
During the summer of 2021, he commenced training with the first-team squad. Subsequently, he earned a selection into the Citizens’ squad to play in the 2021–22 UEFA Champions League.
On September 21st, 2021, Romeo made his professional debut at the age of seventeen, in the third round of the 2021–22 EFL Cup against Wycombe Wanderers, and received a yellow card.

On July 6th, 2022, Roméo joined Southampton and signed a five-year contract with them. He made his debut match for the Saints on August 6th, 2022, in a 4–1 loss away to Tottenham Hotspur.
His first goal for the team came on August 30th, 2022, in the game against Chelsea, where he scored in the Saints’ 2–1 win, thereby becoming the first player born in 2004 to score in the Premier League.
He is of Ghanaian descent but was born in Belgium. He played one official game for the Belgian U15 youth team in 2019 and scored once in a Belgium U16 match. Since then, he has played several friendlies, and he was often the team captain.
On March 17th, 2023, Roméo received his first call-up to represent the Belgian senior national team by manager Domenico Tedesco for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match against Sweden and the friendly against Germany.
As a defensive midfielder, he is known for his skills on the pitch. He draws inspiration from Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets and his former teammate Fernandinho. Roméo is comfortable when recovering the ball and makes use of intense pressing using intelligence, tenacity, pace, and line-breaking deep passes.
Throughout his career, Romeo has made a total of 29 appearances and scored one goal for Southampton, as of May 28th, 2023; he has two EFL Cup appearances and three Premier League appearances.
