Wootton’s career in journalism began in his native New Zealand, where he wrote an entertainment column for The Dominion Post and worked as a reporter for the television show Good Morning. At the age of 21, he moved to the United Kingdom and found work with Broadcast magazine after a stint at trade magazines.

In 2007, Wootton joined the News of the World, initially as part of the TV team before becoming the TV editor and eventually the show-business editor until the newspaper’s closure in 2011. Following the closure, he became a columnist and feature writer for the Daily Mail and held the position of editor-at-large for Now magazine.
