Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born on July 3, 1962 in Syracuse, New York, United States. His father, Thomas Cruise Mapother III was an electrical engineer and his mother, Mary Lee was a special education teacher. He has three sisters he grew up with. Tom’s childhood was a really difficult one having lived in near poverty.

He spoke of his father as a bully and coward who would always beat up his children. It is alleged that in 14 years, Tom had attended 15 different schools. He attended the new Robert Hopkins Public School for his fourth and fifth grade education.

While at Glen Ridge High School in Glen Ridge, New Jersey in 1980, Tom took up acting. Tom’s luck shined when he starred in his school’s production of “Guys and Dolls”.

At age 18, with the blessing of his mother and stepfather, Cruise moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. After working as a busboy in New York, he went to Los Angeles to try out for television roles. He signed with CAA and began acting in films. He first appeared in a bit part in the 1981 film Endless Love, followed by a major supporting role as a crazed military academy student in Taps later that year.

In 1983, Cruise was part of the ensemble cast of The Outsiders. That same year he appeared in All the Right Moves and Risky Business, which has been described as “A Generation X classic, and a career maker for Tom Cruise.” He also played the male lead in the Ridley Scott film Legend, released in 1985. By 1986’s Top Gun, his status as a superstar had been cemented.

In 1988, he was adjudged the Worst Actor for the film “Cocktail” and awarded the Razzie Award. A year later in 1989, he won Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for the film “Born on the Fourth of July.” He further got his first ever Academy Award Nomination for Best Actor.

Tom won his second second Golden Globe Award and second nomination for the Academy Award for the film “Jerry Maguire”. His most successful movie till date is the Mission Impossible series which he began starring in from 1996. Reports have it that, it is the first United States feature film to be shown in more than 3000 theatres.

In 1999, Tom received his third Golden Globe Award and third Academy Award nomination for the film “Magnolia”. He has been nominated three times for the Oscars but have never won any. Tom has been in several relationship over the years but has only one child, Suri whom he had in 2006 while married to Katie Holmes and is said to not be in close contact with.

In total he has three children, one biological and the two others adopted from his three year marriage with Nicole Kidman. The Mission Impossible star actor is estimated to be US$600 million.

When he played a small part in the 1981 movie “Endless Love” at the age of 19, Tom Cruise launched his early acting career. In order to further his early career, he took on roles in additional movies. He played “Joel Goodson” in the hugely successful comedy “Risky Business” in 1983.

Tom Cruise made his huge breakthrough in 1986 when he had the part as ‘Lieutenant Pete’ in the action drama picture ‘Top Gun’. His status as a celebrity was cemented when the film was a great hit. With movies like “The Color of Money” (1986), “Cocktail” (1988), and “Born on the Fourth of July” (1989), he maintained his winning streak throughout the late 1980s.

In 1999, Tom Cruise costarred with Kidman in Stanley Kubrick’s erotic and psychological drama film Eyes Wide Shut. That same year he took a supporting role, as a motivational speaker, Frank T.J. Mackey, in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia (1999). For his performance he received another Golden Globe and nomination for an Academy Award.

When he portrayed Ethan Hunt in the espionage and action film “Mission: Impossible” in 1996, he also found popularity. With roles in movies like “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999), “Vanilla Sky” (2001), “Minority Report” (2002), “The Last Samurai” (2003), “Collateral” (2004), “Rock of Ages” (2012), and “Edge of Tomorrow” (2014),

Tom Cruise continued to be very bankable and well-liked during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He gained the most notoriety for his portrayal of “Ethan Hunt” in the “Mission: Impossible” movies. With almost $2 billion in global revenue, the series is the 17th-highest-grossing film series of all time.
