The billionaire businessman who created Italy’s largest media company before transforming the country’s political landscape, is understood to have passed away over the weekend.

Who was Silvio Berlusconi?

Berlusconi’s was born on September 29, 1936 and was an Italian media tycoon and politician

He was Italy’s longest-serving Prime Minister in the period following the Second World War.

Berlusconi served on three occasions, from 1994 to 1995, 2001 to 2006, and 2008 to 2011.

He stepped down for the last time in 2011 as Italy came close to a Greece-style debt crisis.

What was Silvio Berlusconi’s cause of death and when did he die?

Berlusconi died on June 9, 2023, after being rushed to hospital.

No official cause of death has been revealed but he had been suffering from leukaemia “for some time” and recently developed a lung infection.

The flamboyant Forza Italia leader was admitted to hospital last week for what his aides said were pre-planned tests related to his illness.

But it came just three weeks after he was discharged following a six-week stay at the same hospital – during which time doctors found he had a rare type of blood cancer and he underwent intensive therapy.

On Monday, Silvio Berlusconi’s remains were transported from the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, where he died, to his residence in Arcore, where his family will get the chance to “say their final goodbyes,” a family spokesperson told CNN.

On Tuesday, the coffin will travel back to Milan, home to the headquarters of Berlusconi’s media empire Mediaset.

A state funeral — customary for current and former prime ministers in Italy — will be held at the Milan’s Duomo at 3 p.m. (9 a.m. ET) on Wednesday, a spokesman for the diocese told CNN.

A national day of mourning has been declared for Wednesday, Alfredo Mantovano, an undersecretary at the office of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told CNN.
