George Anthony Devolder Santos is a New York-based American politician. George Santos, a Republican, was elected in 2022 to represent New York’s 3rd congressional district, which includes parts of northern Long Island and northeast Queens, after unsuccessfully running for the seat two years earlier.

George Santos claimed that his maternal grandparents were Ukrainian Jews who fled to Belgium and then to Brazil to escape the Holocaust during World War II, but genealogical records and other evidence show that Santos’ ancestors have lived in Brazil for at least three generations and have no connection to Ukraine, Jewish heritage, or Holocaust survivors.
Archived versions of his campaign website from earlier in 2022 claim that his grandparents fled Europe during the war and are Belgian. Santos has also claimed that his father was Angolan.

She sacrificed everything to support George and her family. She gave George the American dream, a debt he wishes to repay to the rest of his neighbors and constituents. On September 11, 2001, George’s mother was in her office in the South Tower when the horrific events of that day unfolded.
George Santos worked as a customer service representative at a Dish Network call center in College Point, Queens, from October 2011 to July 2012.
During this time, he allegedly told acquaintances and coworkers that his family was wealthy and owned large amounts of real estate in the United States and Brazil.
During his congressional campaign in 2022, he claimed that he and his family owned 13 rental properties in New York. There was no mention of such properties on his campaign’s financial disclosure forms or in public records.
George Santos told the Post that the claim was false and that he had no properties as of the end of 2022.

George Santos has sided with Donald Trump. He has referred to police brutality as a made-up concept. Santos called abortion “barbaric” and compared it to slavery in a speech to the Whitestone Republican Club in Whitestone, Queens, in 2022.
George Santos ran as a Republican against Democratic incumbent Thomas Suozzi for the United States House of Representatives in New York’s 3rd congressional district. He was defeated by Suozzi by a margin of approximately 46,000 votes, 55.9 percent to 43.4 percent.
Santos ran for the 3rd congressional district again in 2022, though the district boundaries had changed following the 2020 redistricting cycle. He faced Democrat Robert Zimmerman in the race.
Both George Santos and Zimmerman are openly gay, making this the first time two openly LGBTQ candidates have faced off in a general election for a seat in Congress.
Santos defeated Zimmerman by around eight percentage points in the November 2022 election, flipping the district and helping Republicans retake control of the House by a narrow margin.
