The death of Westbrook’s buddy and teammate Khelcey Barrs III, in his opinion, was the most significant turning moment in his life. He started training harder in the gym as a consequence, and he soon gained popularity as a high school player.
He ultimately was selected for the college basketball team. He performed well throughout his UCLA career, and his team’s two-season run to the final four was aided by his dynamic performance.
His big break came in 2008 when Oklahoma picked him with the fourth overall pick in the NBA draft. In 2011, he played a crucial role in helping his club get to the Western Conference Tournament finals.
The coaches chose him to play in the 2012 NBA All-Star Game. His club reached the finals for the first time since the brand was restored as a result of his enthusiastic effort.
Due to a knee injury, he missed the first two games of the 2013–2014 season. In his return game against the New York Knicks, he scored 14 points and contributed to his team’s resounding victory.
Russell Westbrook Career
In his debut season, Westbrook averaged over 15 points per game, earning him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team. By the end of his third season, he had become only the fifth player in league history to reach those milestones, having amassed 4,000 points, 1,500 assists, and 1,000 rebounds.
Westbrook assisted a young, dynamic Thunder squad in 2011 by pairing up with fellow All-Star Kevin Durant to go to the Western Conference Finals.

During the 2011–12 season, the 6’3″ point guard averaged 23.6 points per game and guided the Thunder to an NBA Finals battle against the Miami Heat.
Westbrook often stole the show with his explosive drives and relentless play until Miami pulled away to win in five games, despite the matchup being promoted as a duel between scoring champion Durant and Heat superstar LeBron James.
As a member of the American men’s basketball team later that summer, he won an Olympic gold medal.
Following surgery for a meniscus tear sustained in the 2013 playoffs, Westbrook’s run of 394 consecutive regular-season games played was broken by a second procedure a few months later.
Although Westbrook made an early comeback to the NBA roster in 2013–14, he lost two more months after having a third knee procedure at the end of December.
