Angel Fournier Rodríguez, the best Cuban rower in history, has passed away on on Thursday, March 16th, 2023 at the age of 34.
He had been a member of the Cuban rowing team for more than a decade, and had represented his country at numerous international competitions, including the World Rowing Championships, the Pan American Games, and the Olympics (2008, 2012, 2016).

Who Was Angel Fournier?
On December 31, 1987, Angel Fournier Rodriguez was born in Caimanera, Guantánamo. Fournier showed off his outstanding rowing skills by winning a silver medal at the first Alba Games in Havana in 2005 while he was still a young man.
Due to a tactical error, he finished sixth in his Olympic debut in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. At Beijing 2008, he had previously earned a grade of twelve. Fournier was chosen as one of Cuba’s top 10 competitors in both 2014 and 2017.
His impressive resume includes gold medals from the 2011 Pan American Games, 2015 World Cup in Slovenia, 2019, and, perhaps, most importantly, the Olympic Games.
In the single mastery in London in 2012, the greatest Cuban rower in history finished seventh. He earned the silver medal at the World Rowing Championships the following year. In the open category, he finished sixth at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
In the single sculls event at the 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Florida, he won silver. In 2020, Fournier retired from international competition and relocated to the US.

Angel Fournier, the Cuban rower who won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, passed away on Thursday, March 16th, 2022. Since, Fournier’s death, many questions were raised about the circumstances surrounding his passing.
According to various reports, Angel Fournier died due to a heart attack. Angel Fournier confessed to having a cardiovascular issue in 2019, but he had already overcome it by that time. And, later in the same year, he won a bronze medal at the World Cup in Poland and a gold medal in the Pan American Games in Lima.
The unfortunate news was first confirmed by World Rowing with a heartfelt note for him, saying
“The news of the loss of Cuban rower Angel Fournier Rodriguez saddens World Rowing. Pan American champion, multiple World Cup medalist, and two-time Olympian Fournier Rodriguez We send our condolences to the Cuban Federation and Angel’s family.”
