Who was Chester Borrows?
Chester Borrows was a former National MP for Whanganui who served as courts minister and associate minister of justice and social development in Sir John Key’s National Government.
Chester was born in Nelson, and at just 17 years old, he left Nayland College to join the 19-month Police Training Course at Trentham in January 1975. He wanted to make it to Parliament to improve the lives of the people of New Zealand but was unsuccessful in his first two attempts in 1999 and 2002.
Despite two unsuccessful attempts, his resolve remained, and he finally won the Whanganui seat in 2005, which includes South Taranaki, from Labour’s Jill Pettit. He held the seat for four terms and represented the Whanganui electorate until his retirement in 2017.

According to reports, the former National MP was diagnosed with terminal head and neck squamous cell cancer last year and has been fighting the disease bravely since then.

Expressing his condolences over Borrows’ passing, retired Dutch diplomat Rob Zaagman shared a tributary tweet on his Twitter handle, @RobZaagman. The tweet reads, “Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Chester Borrows.
