Jim Leahey was a legendary American sportscaster who was popularly known as the “Voice of Hawaii Sports.” He was a strong and ever-present voice that remained synonymous with sportscasting in Hawaii for nearly 60 years.
Jim officially began his long involvement with UH as the announcer for the inaugural Rainbow Classic in 1964. He was famed for his calls of UH football, baseball, and basketball games, but worked on other sports, too. Before becoming a full-time sportscaster, Jim used to work as a school teacher at Campbell High School. He was the voice for University of Hawaii sports on TV as well as radio, but he also hosted several radio and television magazine-type shows.
In 2016, Jim was inducted into the University of Hawaii’s Sports Circle of Honor, and he officially retired from his legendary role as a sportscaster in 2018, at 75 years of age. The 17-time NSMA Hawaii Sportscaster of the Year, Jim Leahey, was prevailed over by his son, Kanoa Leahey, as the television voice for UH Games for Range Sports.
