Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the child. It’s unclear at this time what the young girl was doing there in the early morning hours near a busy roadway, how she got there or if anyone was with the child when she was hit.
Police would not confirm reports that the child and her mother were both staying at the Magnolia Bay Motel, just down the road from the crime scene when the child was struck.
“It’s a tragic situation,” said Capt. Steven Palmer with the Clayton County Police Department. “The total situation is tragic. We have made contact with the parents, spoken with them.”
Police did tell us the child lived with family in the area. They believe she somehow slipped out of the house undetected the morning of the incident.
