Every year, the theme of the Met Gala is what determines how the celebrities dress for the annual gala. And, just like the elaborate event, the theme is just as exorbitant.
What is Met Gala? The gala is an annual fundraising event that is done for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. The gala is attended by top international celebrities.
Each year the event includes a cocktail hour and a formal dinner, but the theme sets the tone. There have been different themes from 2018’s Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination theme, 2016’s Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology theme to the 1971 Fashion Plate theme.

This year’s theme was camp. Celebrities were asked to come in their campest styles. Confused right? According to dictionary definition, the word camp means a man or his manner being ostentatious and extravagant. It could also mean being deliberately exaggerated and theatrical in style.
The theme was inspired by Susan Sontag’s iconic essay in 1964. The notes describes camp as the essence of “love of the unnatural, artifice and exaggeration.
