The actor died on Tuesday, following a recent battle with cancer, according to the National Comedy Center. Tom’s younger brother and professional partner, Dick Smothers, said Tom died at home. Dick stated that Tom was a “one-of-a-kind creative partner” and a brother “everyone would want in their life.”
He stated: “Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner. I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime together with him, on and off stage, for over 60 years. Our relationship was like a good marriage – the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another. We were truly blessed.”
Journey Gunderson, executive director of the National Comedy Center, also released a statement on Smothers’ passing. “Tom Smothers was not only an extraordinary comedic talent, who, together with his brother Dick, became the most enduring comedy duo in history, entertaining the world for over six decades – but was a true champion for freedom of speech, harnessing the power of comedy to push boundaries and our political consciousness,” Gunderson said.
There will be a private memorial service for friends and family in 2024. Dick and his wife Marie requested that all memorial donations for Tom would be made to the National Comedy Center, which has showcased the Smothers Brothers career.

Tom has been married three times. His first wife was Stephanie Shorr, an actress and singer whom he married in 1963 and divorced in 1967.
His second wife was Rochelle Robley, a socialite and former wife of Bobby Darin, whom he married in 1974 and divorced in 19761 and then to Marcy Carriker from 1990 until his death.
Tom’s marriage to Marcy, which was by far the longest, also had the most profound impact on his life. Marcy has had a vast career that included several years as a radio host on local radio stations around the country.
