Bethnal Green-born Len Goodman, who grew up in Blackfen, Bexley, was a professional dancer and teacher who became a national treasure after auditioning for Strictly Come Dancing aged 60 – when most people are looking to retire.
Len was head judge of Strictly from its launch in 2004 where he was hugely popular with fans for his knowledge, dry humour and enthusiastic marking, especially his catchphrase ‘seven’. He was replaced as head judge on the BBC show by Shirley Ballas in 2016.
As well as Strictly, he also appeared on the US version of the show, Dancing With the Stars from 2005 until November 2022, where he was last seen on TV, declaring he was retiring to spend more time with his wife Sue, and his grandchildren.

Who is Len Goodman’s wife Sue Barrett?
Sue Barrett is a former professional dance instructor, nearly 20 years younger then Len.
Not much is know about her, as Len previously said: ‘She likes to stay out of the limelight’.
There is no doubt that they enjoyed a close relationship though, as Len regularly referred to her as ‘my wonderful Sue’ and told the Mail ‘she’s gorgeous and makes me very happy.’
He also joked that his wife was lucky to share a bed with him, because he falls asleep immediately.
He said at the time: ‘I am good in bed – I don’t snore. I don’t take the duvet. I just lay there and go straight off to sleep. That’s all you want out of a bloke.’

When did Len Goodman and Sue Barett get married?
The pair started seeing one another 10 years before their 2012 wedding.
Speaking to the Daily Mail about his decision to marry, Len said: “I knew I’d found the woman I wanted to be with for the rest of my life so why not get married?
“I’ve said before I’m selfish and that doesn’t equate well for marriage, but My Wonderful Sue got that out of me. “I’ve become totally unselfish and I think that’s because it’s true love.”
Len and Sue were married in a surprise ceremony, according to The Telegraph. Only close friends were invited and told it was a “quiet Sunday lunch”.
Len said: “I wanted it to be a low-key affair, so we didn’t tell anyone except my 96-year-old mum as I didn’t want her having a heart attack with the surprise.”

Where is Sue Barrett now?
On April 24, 2023, it was announced that Len had passed away aged 78 from bone cancer.
A statement from his agent said: “It is with great sadness to announce that Len Goodman has passed away peacefully, aged 78.
“A much loved husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed by family, friends and all who knew him.”
Len Goodman died on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at a hospice in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, surrounded by his family.
The star lived out his retirement days with Sue, at their home in Kent, where they ran their own ballroom dancing school.
