His pioneering ideas and visionary leadership have made Square a key fintech player.
Lee took on a new challenge as the Chief Product Officer of MobileCoin, a cryptocurrency startup, after leaving Square.
On April 5, 2023, his death was announced, and it was determined that he had been stabbed to death.

He was stabbed near downtown San Francisco on Tuesday according to his family. He was found by the police who treated him before he passed away at the hospital.
Mr Lee’s father posted a message on Facebook on Wednesday confirming the circumstances surrounding his son’s death.
“I just lost my best friend, my son Bob when he lost his life on the street in San Francisco early Tuesday morning,” Rick Lee wrote. “Thank you to those who have reached out in support.”
Tim Oliver Lee, Mr Lee’s brother, also posted on Facebook: “He really was the best of us. I was so fortunate to grow up with him, and I feel like I’ve lost part of myself.”
