Who Was McLeod Buckham-White?
McLeod Buckham-White was a remarkable young man who left an indelible mark on the Columbia College community. Born in 2001 and raised in the Atlanta, Georgia area, McLeod was an only child and was deeply loved by his parents, who have spoken publicly about their son’s death in hopes of raising awareness about mental health.
From a young age, Buckham-White was a gifted athlete, excelling in football and track and field. He had been a member of the Columbia College football team, where he excelled as a defensive back.
In his freshman year, he was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week twice, and he went on to earn All-Ivy honors in his junior year. Off the field, he was an exceptional student, majoring in computer science and economics and earning a spot on the Dean’s List.
After graduating from high school, Buckham-White was recruited to play football for Columbia College. He quickly made a name for himself on the field, earning accolades and awards for his outstanding performance as a defensive back.
Off the field, he was equally impressive, earning top grades and immersing himself in extracurricular activities. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and was involved in various community service initiatives.

McLeod Buckham-White, who is from Atlanta, Georgia, double majored in finance and psychology sadly and unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, March 30th, 2023 due to suicide. The tragic event happened at the Wien Residence Hall, which is located at 411 West 116th Street in New York, New York.
According to an email sent to the community on Friday by Columbia College Dean Josef Sorett and School of Engineering and Applied Science Dean Shih-Fu Chang, McLeod Buckham-White, a student and former member of the football squad, has passed away. McLeod Buckham White died after falling from the student’s dorm.
Columbia Football took to Social media channels to announce his passing and sent condolences and sympathies to him.
The management of Columbia University has not made any formal statements regarding this ongoing incident, and also his family will release his obituary in the near future.

In light of the terrible loss we have experienced as a community, it is critical that we reaffirm our dedication to encouraging and supporting one another as we make our way through these trying times. The use of university tools is encouraged.”
Taylor Osborne wrote, “College students’ stress culture and mental health are not properly discussed. Let McLeod Buckham-White rest in peace.”
