Abena Oppong-Asare: Ghanaian-British wins parliamentary seat in the UK

A Ghanaian British politician Abena Oppong-Asare has been elected as the next Member of Parliament for Erith and Thamesmead.

Abena has become a United Kingdom Member of Parliament after winning with 48% and leading the next person by a whopping 3,758.

It was declared early on Friday morning that Ms Oppong-Asare will become the new Labour MP for the constituency after she received 19,882 votes.

Joe Robertson the Conservative candidate was second on election night, receiving 16,124 votes.

Brexit Party candidate Tom Bright with 2,246 votes and Liberal Democrat Sam Webber with 1,984 votes followed respectively.

The Green Party candidate Claudine Letsae won 876 votes, whilst Richard Mitchell of Christian Peoples Alliance received 272.

Labour’s Teresa Pearce was the constituency’s long-standing MP, winning the seat in the last three elections, but she stepped down ahead of the 2019 General Election. Turnout was 63.3 per cent.

Abena Oppong-Asare is a former Bexley councillor who served as a ward representative for four years until 2018.

The brilliant young lady has been the first female to chalk the feat. Other Ghanaian-British people who have won seats in the UK parliament are Adam Afriyie, Sam Philip Gyimah, and Kwasi Alfred Addo Kwarteng.
